If your home has major pools of standing water after every rain storm, that can be an obvious sign that you need a new roof. But did you know that minor changes in your roof can be a sign you need a full roof replacement?
Most roofs need replacing after 20-30 years of wear and tear – but you don’t have to wait until a major catastrophe strikes before you schedule your roof replacement. If your roof has one of these 6 signs of deterioration, take action and schedule an inspection today!
1. Curled shingles
If shingles are reaching the end of their life, they may begin to curl or buckle. This happens because moisture in your attic space forces nails to push up and out of the roof’s decking, and can lead to shingles falling off your roof and reduced protection from the elements. Even if your roof isn’t leaking yet, curling shingles are an unattractive look for any home, so most homeowners will replace them after 20 years of wear and tear.
2. Cracked or missing shingles
Cracked shingles can happen after wind damage or wide-ranging temperatures, and wind can blow these damaged shingles off of your roof. A few shingles can easily be replaced, but multiple cracked shingles may indicate that it’s time for a full replacement.
3. Moss
While moss can initially be a cosmetic issue, too much moss can eat away at your shingles, compromising their weatherproofing abilities and holding in moisture. While most moss can be brushed off, there’s no guarantee that it won’t grow back, and you may need to consult a professional contractor to determine the cause of the mold growth.
4. Attic temperature
If your attic has proper ventilation, its temperature should be consistent with the outdoor temperature. If your attic is warmer than the outside temperature, it can cause warped wood, mold growth, ice dams, and prematurely aged shingles.
5. Missing granules
Granules on your shingles are designed to protect your roof from sun exposure, and it’s completely normal for your shingles to lose some granular texture as your roof gets older. However, if you notice an excessive amount of granules in your gutters, this could be a sign that your shingles need replacing.
6. Sagging roof
If you can visibly see your roof sagging from a simple inspection from the ground, this is a serious sign of rotting wood or other structural issues. Don’t risk going up on your own – call Hopkins Roofing, and we’ll help you decide if now is the right time for a roof replacement.
